How should I store flowers from a florist if I receive them a day before an event?

The Overnight Flower Storage Strategy

Receiving a beautiful floral arrangement a day before your event is a common scenario, whether for a wedding, party, or corporate function. Proper overnight storage is not merely about putting flowers in a cool place; it is a deliberate process that mimics the conditions of a professional floral cooler. By following a few key steps, you can significantly preserve the arrangement's freshness, structure, and hydration, ensuring it looks its absolute best when your guests arrive.

Assessing Your Arrangement Type

Your first step is to identify what kind of arrangement you have received, as this dictates the best storage method. The mechanics and design integrity must be preserved.

  • Loose Bunches or Bouquets in Water: These are the simplest to handle. Ensure the vase or bucket is filled with fresh, cool water.
  • Arrangements in Floral Foam (Oasis): The foam block must remain fully saturated. Check that the container holding the foam has water in it, and gently pour more water over the foam's surface until it can absorb no more.
  • Hand-Tied Bouquets (Wrapped): Do not remove the wrapping if it is providing structural support. You can store it upright in a container with enough water to cover the stems, or lay it flat in a cool, dark place if instructed by your florist.
  • Boxed or Specialty Designs (e.g., corsages, boutonnieres): These are often designed to be stored flat in their boxes in the refrigerator. Keep them away from fruits and vegetables.

Creating the Ideal Storage Environment

The goal is to slow down the flowers' respiration and water loss. Three factors are critical: temperature, humidity, and airflow.

  1. Cool Temperature: Find the coolest spot in your home, ideally between 34°F and 38°F (1°C to 3°C). A spare refrigerator or a very cool basement is perfect. A standard home refrigerator is often set around 37°F, making it an excellent choice. If using a refrigerator, proceed to the next point.
  2. Avoid Ethylene Gas: Ethylene is a natural plant hormone that accelerates aging and wilting. It is emitted by ripening fruits and vegetables, especially bananas, apples, and tomatoes. Never store your flowers in the same refrigerator compartment as these items.
  3. Low Light and No Drafts: Store flowers in a dark place away from direct sunlight, heating vents, ceiling fans, or air conditioning units. Drafts cause rapid dehydration.
  4. Maintain Humidity: If your storage area is dry, you can lightly mist the petals and foliage with clean water, avoiding the centers of flowers like roses which can develop botrytis (gray mold) if too wet.

Pre-Storage Hydration Check

Even if the arrangement looks perfect, a quick hydration check can prevent overnight wilting.

  • Top Off the Water: For arrangements in a vase or foam, add fresh, cool water to the maximum level. Use room temperature water, as very cold water can shock the stems.
  • Inspect for Fallen Foliage: Remove any leaves or petals that have fallen into the water, as they decompose and promote bacterial growth that clogs stems.
  • Avoid Disturbance: Resist the urge to rearrange or move the flowers excessively. This can damage stems and bruise petals.

Final Steps Before the Event

On the day of your event, remove the arrangement from storage at least one to two hours before display. This allows the flowers to acclimate to room temperature and fully open. Give the arrangement a final check: top up the water, remove any damaged petals or leaves, and gently fluff or adjust the design as needed. Place it in its intended location, away from direct sun, heat sources, and fruit bowls. With this professional approach, your florist's creation will deliver maximum impact and beauty throughout your celebration.
